Overview
This one-day symposium for pediatricians, family physicians and other healthcare providers will showcase the latest approach, updates and research related to several common patient issues confronted by primary care providers as well as newer and more complex diseases. Our speakers will address health concerns, share cases and offer guidelines on how to manage the patient. We are excited to present lectures on obesity: clinical therapies and beyond, substance use, eating disorders, foot issues, myopia and other eye issues, brain tumors, hot topics in infectious diseases and pediatric palliative care.

Objectives
- Identify the scope of eating disorders problems
- Recognize common presenting symptoms of restrictive eating disorders in a clinical outpatient setting
- Describe current guidelines on managing presenting symptoms of eating disorders
- Enhance understanding of evidenced-based treatment options for eating disorders, specifically outpatient Family-Based Treatment (FBT)
- Discuss recent changes in epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of respiratory and gastrointestinal viral infections in children
- Discuss recent changes in recommendations for universal and conditional vaccination for children
- Discuss recent changes in antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal agent approvals and recommendations for use in children
- Recognize common variations in foot position and development in children and counsel families about the natural history of these conditions
- Recognize and manage common causes of foot pain in children and adolescents.
- Discuss management options for chalazion
- Differentiate some key features for differentiating types of conjunctivitis (viral, bacterial, allergic, blepharitis) and how to manage each kind
- Recognize warning signs of red eyes that indicate potential serious disease
- Define pediatric palliative care
- Discuss the basic components of primary palliative care and how to incorporate into general practice
- Recognize where expert pediatric palliative care consultation may be helpful
- Summarize the prevalence and potentially blinding complications associated with myopia or “nearsightedness”
- Identify children with increased risk of developing myopia and high myopia
- Describe new technologies for treating myopia
- Explain the clinical presentation & diagnostic evaluation of children with CNS tumors
- Learn overview of multimodality treatment, its complications & long-term sequela of brain tumors
- Recognize central nervous system oncologic emergencies
- Recognize that obesity is a chronic, relapsing, multi-factorial, neurobehavioral disease that results from dysregulated energy homeostasis
- Discuss the rationale for recommending anti-obesity medications for children and adolescents with obesity
- Discuss the pre-surgical evaluation for determining bariatric surgery candidacy in children and adolescents
- Describe the benefits, risks, and long-term outcomes of children and adolescents who undergo bariatric surgery
- Describe the two most common bariatric surgical procedures used in children and adolescents
- Explain the risks, and long-term outcomes of children and adolescents who undergo bariatric surgery
- Utilize appropriate methods to screen adolescents for alcohol, tobacco, and drug use
- Articulate the value and limitations of urine drug testing in clinical practice
- Provide effective brief interventions to substance using adolescents
