Overview
This one-day symposium presented by the Division of Endocrinology is designed for healthcare providers interested in learning about the latest recommendations for the identification and, in some cases, management of certain endocrinologic conditions and diseases. Our panel of distinguished speakers will address health concerns, share cases and offer guidelines on how to manage certain patients. In addition, they will provide the latest research, technology and approaches to some of the more complex diseases in children and teens.

This course is approved for the virtual participation credit. It will be recorded, and the videos will be available to the virtual conference participants approximately one week after the event. Only the paid participants will be able to log in and view the recorded sessions after the course ends.

Objectives
- Respond to an abnormal NBS for CAH or X-ALD
- Interpret cortisol values based on age and time of day
- Identify children with iatrogenic adrenal insufficiency in need of stress-dose steroids
- Describe the spectrum of normal menstrual patterns in adolescent girls
- List common causes for abnormal menstrual patterns during adolescence and discuss appropriate diagnostic work up for this problem
- Discuss management options for girls with heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
- Describe pediatric bone health and why it is important
- Explain bone health assessment in pediatrics
- Describe the Lurie Children’s Bone Health Program, our services, and who and how to refer to us
- Properly assess growth to determine if there is a concern
- Discuss how to initiate a growth evaluation if a concern arises
- Recognize when further evaluation and endocrine referral is needed
- Review a growth chart effectively
- Identify when there is potential growth pathology
- Recognize typical symptoms of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
- Discuss proper work-up to diagnose a thyroid disorder
- Recognize when to refer to a pediatric endocrinologist
- Review normal physiology of puberty including gonadarche and adrenarche in males and females
- Identify common disorders of early puberty and delayed puberty
- Discuss appropriate initial diagnostic evaluation and referral
- Identify puberty disorders in children and when to refer for evaluation
- Discuss initial workup for puberty disorders
- Describe therapeutic interventions available for puberty disorders and when appropriate to use
- Discuss the pathopsysiology of youth onset type 2 diabetes
- Describe the difference between adult and youth onset type 2 diabetes
- Discuss highlights from recent trials focused on youth onset type 2 diabetes
- Manage the patient in outpatient care
- Identify risk factors for T2DM
- Discuss the approach to the adolescents with prediabetes
- Diagnose children and adolescents with possible youth onset T2DM
- Increase familiarity with medications being used in youth onset T2DM and their side effects.
- Identify potential complications for adolescents with youth onset T2DM
