Pediatric Pearls Orthopedics & Sports

Overview

This one-day symposium presented by the Division of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine is designed for pediatricians, family physicians and other healthcare providers. This one-day symposium will showcase the latest approach, updates and research related to several common patient issues confronted by primary care providers related to bone and joint health as well as sports-related concerns and injuries. Our speakers will address health concerns, share cases and offer guidelines on how to manage the patient. We are excited to present lectures on scoliosis, concussions, knee pain, fracture management. bone health, hand and wrist injuries and sessions that will include on-hands demonstration on how to conduct certain joint examinations. This COURSE IS LIVE IN-PERSON CREDIT ONLY. It will not be streamed or recorded for on-demand viewing. If this course needs to be moved to a virtual format due to state mandates regarding Covid-19, we will notify you ASAP and proper credit will be discussed.

Objectives

  • Perform a complete knee examination  
  • Relate physical examination findings to common causes of knee pain in children and adolescents 
  • Provide initial management of some types of uncomplicated fractures 
  • Describe screening protocols and clinical exam findings in order to identify mild scoliosis, Initiate non-operative treatment in mild scoliosis prior to referral to an orthopaedic surgeon.
  • Recognize when a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon is necessary.
  • Discuss common pediatric hand and wrist injuries
  • Recognize when a referral for an upper extremity injury is warranted
  • Recognize common fracture patterns in children
  • Discuss the latest research on sports concussion
  • Explain most recent guidelines on returning children to sports and to the classroom
  • Describe bracing techniques for common pediatric sports medicine conditions
  • Assess and practice the skills for application of pediatric bracing
  • Describe general principles in the evaluation and initial treatment of pediatric knee injuries.
  • Identify common knee injuries in the pediatric population
  • Perform a complete examination of the hand and wrist 
  • Relate physical examination findings to common causes of hand and wrist pain in children and adolescents 
  • Identify possible reasons for poor pediatric bone health Identify common tests used in a bone health evaluation
  • Identify two common treatment modalities for decreased bone density in pediatric patients
