Course Overview

Sponsored by Lurie Children’s Division of Rehabilitative Services & Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, this course will review the importance of tummy time as a foundation for building the strength of antigravity muscles, assisting and addressing contractures, optimizing comfort, and preventing avoidance. Audience members will listen to a discussion on how to incorporate tummy time into everyday routines and the benefits of this position for all SMA types and in all stages of development. The course will address common perceived barriers and discuss strategies to optimize success. 

Target Audience

This educational course is designed for physical therapists and caregivers supporting children with SMA. 

Presenters

Laurey Brown, PT, DPT, PCS is a board-certified specialist of pediatric physical therapy who currently works at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of  Chicago and in private practice with Early Intervention. She received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis in 2007 and completed the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disability (LEND) fellowship through Boston Children's Hospital in 2008. She serves as a speaker for the pharmacology companies, Biogen and Sarepta, covering topics related to Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, respectively. She has over 13 years of experience treating patients with neuromuscular diagnoses and has had multiple poster presentations related to SMA at national and international conferences. She enjoys collaborating with families and providers through the evolving treatment landscape for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Katie Hoffman, PT, MPT is a pediatric physical therapist currently employed as a Physical Therapist II at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. She has worked in pediatrics for 16+ years after receiving her Master of Physical Therapy from Midwestern University in 2002. Over the last 4 years she has worked primarily as a clinical evaluator in neuromuscular clinical research trials as an active member of the neuromuscular team while also seeing a varied caseload of medically complex patients in the outpatient setting. She has had multiple poster presentations related to children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) receiving commercial drug therapy and its impact on the changing natural history. She is dedicated to serving neuromuscular patient populations and their families with special interests in early childhood development, gait development and biomechanics, and patient and family education.

 Kristin Krosschell, PT, DPT, MA is a Pediatric Credentialed Specialist Physical Therapy and a Professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a research physical therapist in the Neuromuscular Division at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. She is a faculty member teaching in both the pediatric and neurologic curriculum in the Department of PT and Human Movement Sciences at Northwestern University.  She has over 30 years of clinical, teaching and research experience in single and multi-center clinical research studies in Spinal Muscular Atrophy.  Throughout her career she has participated in regional, national, and international meetings of clinicians and physical therapists where she provides education and training to advance clinical care and clinical research, focusing on outcome measures, research related to motor function, and exercise. She has participated as a member of Medical Advisory Boards for Cure SMA, pharma and international SMA committees including the SMA Standard of Care Committees in 2007 and 2018, and is an Advisory Board Member for the newly developed STEP-IN SMA initiative.

Christa Weigel, PT, DPT, PCS is a board-certified specialist in pediatric physical therapy currently employed as a Physical Therapist II at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. She received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis in 2013. She has had multiple national poster presentations related to early detection and intervention for infants with neuromotor deficits and changes in natural history of children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) receiving commercial SpinrazaTM. She also presented a lecture on SMA at APPTAC in 2018. She has a passion for working with children with neurological and neuromuscular conditions with special interests in early detection of CP including completion of advanced training in the General Movement Assessment, infant motor development, development of gait, parent/family education and transition of care from pediatrics to adulthood.

This is Part 1 of 2. This module is an on-demand formatted webinar. The course originally launched live on April 20, 2021.  This course offers EI credential credit through the Early Intervention Program,  as well as continuing edcation through the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation for physical and occupational therapists.
