The Protective Services Team invites all professionals whose work involves interaction with child abuse and neglect to the 2017 annual symposium.

This is a continuing education event designed to educate physicians and professionals from all disciplines who care for children. Presented by internationally and nationally known experts in the area of child maltreatment and sponsored by Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, this symposium aims to help medical and other professionals expand their knowledge about child maltreatment.

Annual Child Maltreatment Symposium 2017 - Overview

The Protective Services Team invites all professionals whose work involves interaction with child abuse and neglect to the 2017 annual symposium.

This is a continuing education event designed to educate physicians and professionals from all disciplines who care for children. Presented by internationally and nationally known experts in the area of child maltreatment and sponsored by Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, this symposium aims to help medical and other professionals expand their knowledge about child maltreatment.
 

Date, Time & Location

The Symposium will be held over the course of two days, from October 5 - 6, 2017 at Lurie Children's Conference Center, 11th floor, 225 E. Chicago Avenue, Chicago. See map.
Day 1 - October 5: 8 a.m. through 4:45 p.m.  Day 2 - October 6: 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
 

Parking

Parking is available in the Huron-Superior garage, located at 225 E. Huron, or the Erie-Ontario garage, located at 321 E. Erie. Participants will receive a complimentary parking ticket upon registration. Parking garage users must present their original ticket and their complimentary ticket upon leaving the garage. Objectives
  • Evaluate key clinical features of abusive head trauma and some of the more common medical conditions that mimic abusive head trauma
  • Describe health risks of the foster care system that can be managed with well-designed health care service delivery
  • Identify the feasibility, sensitivity and specificity of fast MRI in young children with mild traumatic brain injury
  • Describe the biomechanics of short distance falls and associated injury mechanisms
  • Explain the effects that an unnecessary removal from home may have on a child
  • Summarize the court system in child abuse and neglect cases and the physician’s current role in that system
  • Identify avenues of potential collaboration between the court and the medical community
  • Summarize the history and current state of the child protection system in Cuba
  • Describe the estimated prevalence of LGBTQ youth in the child welfare system and the unique medical, social and mental health risks faced by LGBTQ foster youth
  • Outline an approach to evaluating medical neglect
