The Protective Services Team invites all professionals whose work involves interaction with child abuse and neglect to the 2016 annual symposium.

This is a continuing education event designed to educate physicians and professionals from all disciplines who care for children. Presented by internationally and nationally known experts in the area of child maltreatment and sponsored by Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, this symposium aims to help medical and other professionals expand their knowledge about child maltreatment.

Child Maltreatment Symposium - Overview

The Protective Services Team invites all professionals whose work involves interaction with child abuse and neglect to the 2016 annual symposium.

This is a continuing education event designed to educate physicians and professionals from all disciplines who care for children. Presented by internationally and nationally known experts in the area of child maltreatment and sponsored by Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, this symposium aims to help medical and other professionals expand their knowledge about child maltreatment.
 

Date, Time & Location

The Symposium will be held over the course of two days, from October 13 - 14, 2016 at Lurie Children's Conference Center, 11th floor, 225 E. Chicago Avenue, Chicago. See map.
Day 1 - October 13: 8 a.m. through 4:15 p.m.  Day 2 - October 14: 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
 

Parking

Parking is available in the Huron-Superior garage, located at 225 E. Huron, or the Erie-Ontario garage, located at 321 E. Erie. Participants will receive a reduced rate parking ticket upon registration. Parking garage users must present their original ticket and their discounted ticket upon leaving to receive the reduced rate.

Objectives
  • Describe the biological basis for how child maltreatment causes poor health outcomes.
  • Describe key ages where human development is most vulnerable to damage from maltreatment.
  • Describe effective ways to ask the questions to engage caregivers and better understand the “fabric” of the child’s world.
  • Describe the association between injuries of physical abuse and environments high in psychosocial risk factors.
  • Understand when sexual behaviors in children are normal or abnormal.
  • Describe new research discussing how sexual behavior problems in children may be related to trauma other than sexual abuse.
  • Select appropriate photographs to photo document a potentially abusive injury.
  • Understand the purported controversy regarding the validity of Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma.
  • Understand several evidence-based treatment models currently being piloted and/or implemented in Chicago Public Schools and other school districts nationally.
  • Discuss the differential diagnoses of the cause and manner of Death in Sudden Unexplained Infant death encountered in forensic setting.
  • Discuss reasons why autopsy and scene investigations are important for determining the cause and manner of death.
