Pediatric Pearls VIRTUAL- Psychiatry in Primary Care

Overview

This full-day conference should be attended by healthcare providers interested in learning more about several mental health topics relevant to our youth. Included will be topics on psychotherapy, suicide screening, bipolar depression and schizophrenia, Tourette syndrome, non-epileptic seizures and the fundamentals of parent training. Several longer sessions and expert panels will take a deep dive in these hot topics allowing ample time for discussion.

Objectives

  • List the risk factors and early signs of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in youth
  • Differentiate between early bipolar disorder, early schizophrenia, and more common mental health disorders in youth
  • Outline the benefits of early intervention in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia  
  • Discuss the causes of oppositional behavior in children and adolescents
  • Explain the five tenets of positive parenting
  • Describe the age of onset and course of the tic disorders
  • Discuss the differences between tics and stereotypies
  • Manage a patient with a new onset tic disorder
  • Discuss prevalence rate of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and suicide completion among youth
  • Describe the pros and cons of currently available suicide screening tools for primary care settings
  • Review successful implementation strategies in primary care
  • Recognize risk factors for conversion disorder (PNES)
  • Discuss clinical care pathway for patients with conversion disorder in the pediatric inpatient setting
  • Outline multidisciplinary treatment approaches for pediatric conversion disorder
  • Discuss how childhood anxiety and depression commonly present in primary care settings
  • Describe several evidence-based principles useful in guiding parents of children and adolescents with anxiety and depression
  • Incorporate those principles into concise anticipatory guidance and discussions of behavioral health problems with parents
